Fox News makes fun of Atheist bus ads.

In this video we have Fox News’s Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade and Alisyn Camerota discussing an ad campaign by an Atheist group that will be appearing on Washington D.C. busses. Kilmeade said that atheists chose to feel alone at Christmas.
I find this story really funny. Just watch the video and find out why.

Actually, contrary to the anchor, there are a few birthdays one might celebrate on the longest night of the year, the winter solstice. The most notable is probably Isaac Newton, and also well known is Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross.

Nowhere in any of the Christian bibles is the case made that Dec. 25th is the actual birthdate of the listed messiah. Apparently, it is simply the time chosen for reflection on this event. Most probably, it became an alternative celebration to the Roman Saturnalia and winter solstice during the first few hundred years of Christianity’s history. Over time, given the conversion of Roman society’s ruling class, and most notably the emperor Constantine I’s rule in 306 C.E., the church and its priorities would have rapidly synthesized with the state. This can best be attested to by the survival of papal authority following the gradual collapse of the Western Roman empire. The formal celebration of Christmastide recrystallized most strongly following the Frankish unification under Charlemagne.

Non-biblical writings of important early church founders loosely associate nativity celebrations with events such as the spring equinox (Easter) and what is traditionally celebrated as the Epiphany in early January. Others, such as Origen of Alexandria and Arnobius outright excoriated the concept of having a nativity celebration in the first place, mostly because of the rejection of undesirable religious practices.
