I love to hear my pastor teach. I love his preaching, but I really appreciate his teaching ministry as well. This little bible study has been inspired by him and his message this evening at our Wednesday night Bible Study.

God Wants To Have Conversations With Us.

We find out early in the Bible that man was created, God fellowshipped and talked with his creation. God spent a lot of time with his creation, and from this we see a genuine realization of God’s longing to “converse” with his people. After the fall, though, it became evident that there was a distance in the aspect of God’s fellowship with his creation. We then see in Genesis 4:26 that there was a difference in the way of communication. There was prayer:

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.”

Then the bible records over 50 long prayers and hundreds of smaller prayers that can be classified in the aspects of people:
1. Praying to God
2. Crying out to God
3. Beseeching God
4. Seeking God.

What Prayer Isn’t

Prayer is not simply religious repetition. A lot of the modern day movements in the Church, with the Word of Faith as an example, put their faith in the repetition of quoting certain verses in the Bible in assurance that, that act will bring their victory. This simply isn’t what prayer is.

Prayer Must Be Intentional As Well As Relational

In any human relationship, whether it be with a spouse or friend, you must practice communication. This includes talking, waiting, and listening. There shouldn’t just be a one way route in any form of communication. Prayer is the same way. When we talk to God, we do it with full understanding that, first, He is listening, and secondly, that He has something to say back to us. Sometimes we have to wait on Him for the answer, instead of just jumping on to the next thing. Without the 2 way aspect of prayer, that act becomes one of religious vanity, instead of a means to draw closer to God.

God’s Will And Timing

Probably one of the hardest things for us, as humans, to grasp is God’s Timing and Sovereign Will. The Bible clearly tells us to pray on matters, even to pray without ceasing, but sometimes we tend to give up. It might be because of laziness, but many times we just give up praying because we don’t see the results we want, or the results aren’t being brought forth quickly enough. Let’s get one thing straight. It is impossible for God to fail. Whatever my feelings on any matter, God’s plan is perfect and His Will is priority. This doesn’t mean that I should quit praying for the sick, etc. Whether God chooses to heal someone on this side of eternity or the other, one thing is for certain: The child of God ALWAYS gets healed. We should never give up on petitioning God.

The Unjust Judge

Jesus told a parable about an unjust judge in Luke 18:1-8:

1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:
3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.
4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.
6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith.
7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?”

We see in this parable that the act of being persistent, moved the judge to action. If we are praying Biblically, we will not be attempting to manipulate God as some try. No! God knows our needs. God hears our needs. We can’t give up on our prayers.

In closing this post, think about this:
If Jesus prayed, and he did often, how much more should we be praying? It’s simple conversation and it is vital for every believer.

    Hey Tony
Thats weird cause I was sitting here thinking about you and I was going to make a joke about telling your Pastor about getting your stumble acct killed just joking around then I come to your site and your talking about your Pastor now thats funny
anyway to keep it relevant I pray that way I just say what I have got to say
what’s also strange in the years I really believed I’d pray constantly and things were hell now I don’t think about God much and think prayers falls on deaf ears and I’m at peace, don’t drink or need to,it’s weird.
But I do pray for others and our country thats for sure.

  2. John,
Thanks for thinking of me! Yea, that stumble thing is crazy. Makes you not want to try to network, cause one man’s networking, is another mans spamming.
    Anyhow,
Prayer is powerful and important. Could be that if you were praying to God back in the day, the devil was trying to throw things your way to get you distracted, and if you are better now, could have been that your prayers had an affect on how God has had His hands on you.
    Keep it up, bro!

I believe that.God or someone has watched over me.
I just don’t know why God let the world get like this
and Yes it’s his fault. He controls everything or he doesn’t
testing us through this isn’t logical or loving.
So the whole thing doesn’t make much sense
I guess that why they call it Faith.

    Excellent thought Tony!

For me prayer is even broader than you presented here in this article. Like communication in any human relationship I think communication with God can go beyond the verbal. No doubt two way verbal communication is the heart of prayer. But there can also be nonverbal communication like music, poetry, and dance … like our actions and reactions …

    peace and grace,
    brad

Thanks Brad. I agree with what you say about nonverbal communication. I write songs (not as often as I should) and I can feel the Lord in those times, so I believe that that serves as a type of worship and therefore communication to God. Same thing when I play the piano. Thanks for your insight!

  6. Prayer is so important. I think the best way to worship is to prostrate. I only wish that Christians would do this more often.
