(Ps. 119:9) “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto
according to Your Word.”
OBEDIENCE TO THE WORD
Much is said today about obedience to “the Word.” The Word, as defined by most who use
this statement, refers to the Bible, the Word of God. The idea behind the statement is
entirely correct. We must understand and adhere to the principles of the Word of God. We
must study them and apply them. There is no other way for a person to establish a right relationship with God, other than through this process. However, if a person studies the Bible and comes away from that study with a list of religious do’s and don’ts they have not properly interpreted it. Let me explain.
THE STORY OF MAN’S REDEMPTION
The Word of God’s Purpose, first and forever foremost, is to detail to man God’s Plan for Salvation. Second,
“the Word” tells how God’s marvelous Salvation Plan is to be grasped by lost humanity. Third, “the Word” tells us about the promised results that God works in our lives after our Salvation. And, fourth, the Bible speaks of the future of all men, whether they have accepted God’s gracious Plan or stubbornly resisted and rejected it.
Thus, the Bible is not a list of rules and religious regulations. It is, rather, the marvelous truth of God’s Grace
extended towards undeserving mankind. Thus, first and foremost, being obedient to the Word means to embrace the truth of our Redemption.
THE PRACTICE OF OBEDIENCE
With these thoughts in mind, one must answer the question that David posed. How does a young man (or
any person for that matter) cleanse his way? First, that person must accept that on the Cross of Calvary,
Jesus paid the debt of sin that we owed. Second, we must believe that He broke the back of the principle of sin (man’s sin nature) that dominated our lost beings. Man must accept this free gift so graciously extended from God by Faith. This means that there is nothing man can do to save himself. Once the individual has acquiesced to these truths, he or she is brought into relationship with God. They have been “obedient to the Word.”
SANCTIFICATION AND OBEDIENCE
Man’s responsibility to obey the Word does not end with the Salvation experience. Now the Believer is to
become conformed to the Image of Christ. Again, drawing from the “mold” formed by our Salvation experience, man must admit his inability to change himself and his need for the Spirit of God to complete the work that He has begun in us. Again, the obedience required is the precious obedience of Faith. As I hold to the truth of Christ and Him crucified, the Holy Spirit sees a person humble and dependent upon God. He continues to conform me into His Image. I am not
changed by what I do. I am changed by the Holy Spirit as I believe God’s Word. Thus, being obedient
to the Word is accomplished as one fights the fight of Faith. Then and only then will the life of the Spirit in
Christ Jesus be free to work in me and cause good works to surface.

Really enjoyed this foundational article on the Word. Is the Bible a book of rules or a book laying out a plan? God’s plan for humans. God’s plan of salvation. God’s plan for me.
Too many, even Christians, look at the Bible as a list of rules to follow without having to think deeply about God’s will for our lives and his will in each unique situation.
Great article, I ’stumbled’ it?
peace in Christ,

@Brad,
Thanks for the Stumble. I have talked to many Christians that think the bible is just that. Just a rule book to follow. But it is so much more than that. Sure, God has revealed a way that we should live. He has sent the Holy Spirit to help in that, but the Bible contains the story of mans Redemption from Genesis to Revelation. Thanks for the comment
